The Southeast
District United Methodist mission team arrived in Quito,
Ecuador on Saturday night, June 27, 2009. Churches
represented on the team are Calera First (South Central
District), Alexander City First, Duncan Memorial, and
Fairfax.
The team is expected to teach Vacation
Bible School and participate in laying the foundation for a
new building. Other teams to follow will continue the work.
The team enjoyed a visit to the museum and center of the
world.
Consecration of United
Methodist Church Building:
The team had the joy of participating
in the worship and dedication of a building some members had
worked on in previous years. On Sunday June28th, Bishop
Solomon Cabezas consecrated the building and announced the
official name of the church:
the Agua de Vida
United Methodist Church
(Living Water United
Methodist).
Rev. Ramiro Balseca delivered the
sermon. He challenged the congregation to live up to their
name, to help people discover Jesus, the Living Water.
Physical water is important but spiritual water is more
important.

The service was lively and spirit
filled with procession and joyful singing in the service.
Dr. Roberto and Tom Corson from SIFAT assisted in
translating and helping the Spanish/English service flow
smoothly. Dr. Bill Etheridge, pastor of Alexander City First
UMC, consecrated the pulpit. Rev. Terry Hill, pastor of
Calera UMC, consecrated the baptismal font. Dr. Richard L.
Stryker, district superintendent of the Southeast District,
assisted by Rev. Kelsey Johnson, pastor of Fairfax UMC,
consecrated the Altar/Lord’s Table. The congregation sang in
Spanish lead by the church musical team and Kevin Payne,
associate pastor of Alexander City First, guided the church
with music during offering. The service ended with the
blessing of the children. Following the benediction, the
team participated in a fellowship time with members of the
church.
After dinner, the team gathered for
their marching orders of the week, planning for vacation
Bible School and pouring the cement. The team wrapped up the
night with a time of praise, pray and communion. And then
they rested.
