Southeast District Churches Connecting to Community

Through the apportionment, Southeast District churches are stepping up to the plate and giving through the offering plate to help with missions and outreach globally and through the conference.

In addition to this first mile apportionment giving, many churches are connecting to the communities in which they find themselves through local missions and outreach opportunities.

Below are some of the "direct services" and hands on ministries in the local churches. Contact the church or see their website for opportunity to participate in local ministries.


Alexander City First UMC:

Jacob's Ladder Creative Learning Center is a ministry aimed toward 3 and 4 year old children in the community. We offer a full year program from 6:45 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. More…

On June 4, 2009 Alexander City First will begin Feast of Sharing. This is a new ministry of the FUMC. The goal of Feast of Sharing is to provide a comforting, fulfilling meal at no charge in a warm and welcoming environment to individuals and families in economic and spiritual need. Bethany UMC:

Bethany UMC in collaboration with other churches has a food pantry ministry.


Dadeville First UMC:

 Reach out to local families in need through their Book Bag program. More


Flint Hill UMC:

Flint Hill as a "Pastor’s Special Fund" to help persons in community with groceries, utility bills, gasoline, etc. The church also supports the Tallapoosa Christian Crisis Center which helps families in need.


 

Langdale UMC:

Langdale UMC has a Soup Kitchen, a Clothes Closet, and provides assistance to the Interfaith Food Pantry, Operation Bread Basket and twice yearly Operation Help-A-Child. The church partners with the Christian Service Center, and supports the Fuller Center Project.

There are many volunteer services provided by the church members through the shepherding ministry including Prayer Shawl Ministry, Nursing Home Ministry, partners in education with Lafayette Lanier Elementary School, Operation Help a Child; Click here for detail on each of these ministries and how to help.



 

Lowell UMC:

Lowell has been feeding 100 persons twice a month. The church hand delivers food to shut-ins or those without transportation.


 

St. Paul/Pine Grove Charge:

St. Paul and Pine Grove United Methodist Churches serve out their ministry to the local community through the Five Points Community Development Corporation (Five Points CDC).

The Five Points CDC provides after school and summer tutoring to community children for the purpose of improving classroom improvement and increase high school graduation rate.

Pantry Hour is a program to bring senior citizens together for meal, fun, fellowship and information on issues relevant to their lives. First Friday of each month, about 35 seniors come together for this event.


 

Red Ridge UMC:

Red Ridge has a Brown Bag Program in collaboration with the East Alabama Food Bank in Auburn. The program provides food to the elderly on low income. You are welcome to participate in the actual unloading and delivery of the food....just show up on the third Friday of any month at 8:30 PM.

Children affected by child abuse, abandonment or neglect are ministered to through the Angel Doll Ministry. Volunteers at the church make the dolls to let hurting children know that someone cares. Click here for information on this and other programs.

 

 

Roanoke First UMC:

Roanoke First has been purchasing and distributing food from the United Way Food Bank in Birmingham and distributing in the Randolph County area. Now the church is in the process of starting the Lighthouse Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry to feed on Tuesdays and Thursdays of campus. They will begin probably in June. Other United Methodist Churches in the area are expected to partner with them.

St. Thomas UMC:

St. Thomas looks outside itself by supporting the Care House in Sylacauga with nonperishable food items and volunteers. Each year the church has volunteer in the Central Alabama Sickle Cell Foundation walk to assist persons needing travel and medical assistance associated with Sickle Cell disease.


 

Sylacauga First UMC :

Sylacauga First reaches out to the community through a variety of programs.

Sylacauga First UMC began working with the Sylacauga Area Habitat for Humanity in 1996 and has built several homes in the Sylacauga area.

The church donates supplies and members volunteer at the Care House in Sylacauga, a joint venture with other area churches. The Care House provides food and clothing for those in need. Church members also volunteer in delivering Meals on Wheels five days a week. To learn more about the church’s mission or to volunteer, click here.


 

Trinity UMC:

Trinity has an outreach food ministry, Heart to Heart. Church distributes food to persons in need on second and fourth Thursday of each month.


 

Wadley First UMC:

Wadley First supplies and provides a "Community Food Bank" for persons in need of food in the Wadley community and beyond. The food bank is open on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. The community food bank is made possible in conjunction with the East Alabama Food Bank.

The church recently began a program to help with the rehabilitation of released inmates into the community.


 

Wedowee First UMC:

Wedowee First UMC has a Handy Hands and other programs.

Handy Hands is a group of volunteers able to do minor repairs, including ramps to make homes handicap accessible.

Church members participate in alleviating hunger through the Society of Saint Andrew (SOSA) organization. Volunteers glean cabbage and other produce for SOSA to distribute.

Wesley Chapel:

Wesley Chapel is one of the Sylacauga Churches giving supplies and sending volunteers regularly to the Care House in Sylacauga.


 

These are some of the churches and highlight of some of the local ministries. Local Ministry is just one aspect of our work mission and outreach as the churches seek to minister to the spiritual and physical needs of the people of God in church and community.
